Information about Arteriosclerosis

Colloquially described as a hardening of the arteries, arteriosclerosis is statistically at the top of the list of causes of death. This is due to its pathology and dramatic consequences, e.g. heart attacks and strokes. This disease is a huge cost factor in health care because it consumes over 50% of the funds available for treatment and medical care of the deleterious effects it causes.

Arteriosclerosis is characterised by changes in the walls of the blood vessels. Initially minor damage of the inner walls of the blood vessels can lead to local inflammatory processes. These cause the increased appearance of cellular connective tissue as a result of the various chemical processes involved. The plaque that is created attaches itself to the cell wall and poses a major threat of forming coagulum (blood-clots, thrombi). This clotting can lead to a narrowing or sealing off of the blood vessels, which means that the surrounding areas are "sealed off" from the bloodstream. Depending on the location of the reduced blood circulation in the lower extremities, it makes itself known in the form of painful muscle cramps- at first only after physical exertion and later even while resting. Coronary heart disease is accompanied by tightening sensations and chest pains (Angina pectoris).

Acute occlusion (sealing off) in the brain can lead to strokes, in the heart to heart attacks or in the legs to acute arterial occlusion. The resulting damage depends on the size of the area of affected blood vessels and the length of time they are sealed off. The danger of the unsupplied areas dying off (necrosis) is always present.
